Discord was founded by Jason Citron on May 13, 2015. He found this communication program for gamers can communicate each other with voice and text. In-game voice communication was difficult in games like Final Fantasy XIV and League of Legends. Services like Skype and TeamSpeak had a lot of negatives. For these reasons, the use of discord developed by Citron has also increased considerably thanks to its ease of use. Today, Discord has more than 250 million users. Especially, it became popular between local network gamers and Twitch broadcasters. Well, what are the features that can make Discord a new living space? Let’s take a look at my arguments about it!
- Discord is a multi-vehicle communication program.
Users can communicate with each other via vehicle whatever they want. They can connect with a server with audio, they can type there, they can open their screen sharing, they can send photos, they can voice or video calling privately, etc. Discord’s having many media tools can reduce users’ orientation to other platforms. In my opinion, this argument is the most efficient argument that can make Discord a new living space.
- Discord is a multi-purpose communication program.
When I use Discord for the first time, I used it for developing my instrument skill. I was a participant in a WhatsApp group which is consists of drum players. We moved from WhatsApp to Discord to share our drum playing. We had a server and we were playing drum, we were sharing our techniques. Some of us were kind of master. They were going live at the Discord like a workshop. Especially, today, Discord is used as an online education platform. I am taking two courses via Discord. In fact, Discord has negativities less than other online education platforms. Khas.learn is constantly collapsing because old-saved-videos getting heavy the website. However, in the Discord, we do not have a problem like that. Nowadays, “Discord is a gamers communication program” perception is crashing.
- Easy to use and diversity
Discord’s use is easier than other opponent programs and it has some diverse services. For example, Skype. Usage of Skype is not easy and it has no other than communication, there is no privatization. Discord users can privatize their Discord. They can change the color of their name, they can use different nicks for different servers, they can use emojis to show their reacts. This usage of emojis not similar to other platforms. They can drop an emoji to a specific message. This was is more playful.
However, Discord needs more than these facts for becoming new living space.
- Discord can add more entertainment tools
Discord is used as a tool for entertainment instead of real entertainment. Gamers are not using Discord for having fun. They use it as a tool to reach true entertainment, as a communication platform. Discord can add games with making partnership or they can create their own entertainment products. For example, Discord has groove for listening to music inside the program. They can add something like this for watching video or film. Maybe they can embed YouTube into their software.
- Discord can be mass media
Discord has many-to-many and one-to-one communication flow. However, it might be better to include news flow. For example, Discord can announce new version of games, updates. Of course, this news topic depends on users’ interests. These interests can select via hashtag. News related to hashtags that users select can be served to users. Such as, I am using Discord as an online education platform. I would have liked to my instructors can post the announcements about the courses at the top of the Discord page.
